It is
a day celebrated every year on September 28 as a day to raise awareness about
rabies prevention and reducing rabies transmission.
This
year is celebrated under the theme:
“Act Now: You, Me Community”,
This theme invites
us to take individual and collective steps to stop the spread of dog-mediated
rabies.
These include responsible dog ownership, organizing rabies
education events and participating in rabies vaccine campaigns.
"Rabies is 100%
preventable but only if we act together."
Today, on World Rabies Day, Konyweng
Veterinary Service echoed its voice to raise awareness about a deadly disease
that continues to threaten lives across South Sudan. Rabies claims the lives of
thousands globally each year, and in our communities, children are especially
vulnerable.
What You Need to Know:
·
Rabies is transmitted through bites or scratches
from infected animals, especially dogs.
·
Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always
fatal.
- Vaccinating
dogs is the most effective way to prevent rabies in humans.
- Immediate
washing of wounds and seeking medical care can save lives.
What do you need to do then?
- Vaccinate
your dogs and cats when the vaccination campaigns are on or even
take your pet to the nearest clinic where the vaccine is available to be
vaccinated.
- Educate
your children
to avoid stray animals and report bites of human or animals including ruminants
being bite by dogs to the adults immediately.
- Support
community health workers and veterinarians in their efforts to eliminate
rabies.
- Report
animal bites
to the nearest health facility without delay.
Together,
we can build a rabies-free South Sudan. Let’s protect our animals, our families
and our future.
